Anchor News Volume 10 No.2 & Volume 10 No.3,1979 in the Down Under column have a good accounting of Lodner Phillips Submarine. Also a book published by the Michigan City Historical Society entitled Great Lakes First Submarine, L.D. Phillips "Fool Killer" by Patricia A Gruse Harris. This was done in 1982 and is a biography of Lodner Phillips with accounts of his submarine building exploits. The Submarine sunk in the salvage attempt of the Steamer Atlantic was his third out of four that he built. Anouther was found (his second) in the Chicago River during the salvage of the capsized Eastland. In my opinion, the submarine sunk near the Atlantic, far and away exceeds the historical importance of the Atlantic.
