: : I am a merchant marine for Oglebay Norton and have done a lot of reserch myself. If you go to my site you will see the reserch painting and the interview video i am working on. From all the Captains and people out there that knight i interviewed the Fitz either hit bottom at 3:00 pm
or had a stress fracture to the hall. All the Captains i have interviewed that were out there that night said she hit bottom. It was to much of a coincidence that she was near caribo island on top of the shoal area at 3:00 pm and then at 3:10 pm she goes from no problems to a immediate list
and having to run all pumps and not gain any on your list. She was sinking and in trouble from that point on and at 7:30 pm she went into some waves and could not recover. These ships take nose dives once in a while in a storm to this day but they recover. The Fitz was so low in the water from flooded cargo holds she had no boyency
and by the time they knew what was going on it was to late.
