Recalling lectures I attended by author Frederick Stonehouse as well as Dennis Hale, the sole survivor of the Morrell disaster, a good guage of public sentiment can be found by talking to just about anyone associated with Great Lakes shipping at the time of the sinking. In the minds of these individuals, the 'Fitz is not some unpleasant and distant memory from 1975...It happened yesterday. Same for the Morrell, and that was in '66. These people can tell you volumes regarding public opinion and reaction at the time of the disaster because it's still very fresh in their minds. The news of the 'Fitz sinking sent shock waves of horror, disbelief, and sorrow throughout the entire Great Lakes region. I was only ten at the time and remember it very well, growing up in a lakeport town. Good luck in your research.
