two men from my home town were aboard the morrell. dennis hale, who was the sole
survivor, and has written a book about the sinking, entitled "sole survivor", and saverio
"shav" grippi, who was a very good friend of my deceased father. i was 18 yrs. old
when the morrell went down, and remember the shock and sadness, mr. grippi's body
was found and returned home for burial. mr. hale now resides here and spends time at
the local marine museum. tragically, 9 yrs. later, we lost two more men on the edmund
fitzgerald, one of whom had graduated high school with my wife. both ships were frequent
visitors to our docks. i have paintings of both ships hanging in my house. we can't help
but think of those ships and those men whenever the "gales of november come slashing".
